Time to move on, we leave the bay at Cambados. We navigate in between the mussel beds and leave Ria de Arousa behind us. The sun is really out, but alas there is no wind at all, in contrast with our arrival here. A sea as smooth as a mirror, in which the sun glistens with Isla Sálvora in the background, a picture from a book. It is only 13 miles to Isla Ons, pity we can’t sail. We pick up a mooring at the named Isla, which is part of the “Parque Nacional de las Islas Atlanticas”. Before we left, someone told us that you had to have a permit to lay your boat at the islands, and so we applied for one. But no-one has ever asked us to show this permit, so we shouldn’t have troubled ourselves. The island is 6 km long, the western part is rough, with steep cliffs and the eastern side has multiple beaches and a few houses, mainly restaurants. But there is a special pier for the ferry boats that sail back and forth to take the hundreds of tourists to this island. On top of that there is a coming and going of motorboats, jet skis and fishing boats, causing agitation and pollution! And they call this a protected area! Another illusion lost.
It can be quite windy here and because of all these ferries the boat rocks a lot. The forecast is that the wind will get stronger in the days to come, so after already 2 days we decide to take the boat into the Ria. In the morning hours we drop anchor for a short while at the island in the south, about 600 metres from Isla de Ons, called Isla de Onza, an important breeding place for seabirds. Here you won’t find any tourist! In the afternoon we sail – on the engine – into the Ria in the direction of the town of Combarro, where we berth behind the Isla Tomba. At nightfall we suddenly get surrounded by thick misty clouds, coming in from the sea. At one given moment the clouds are so thick, that we cannot even see the shore. The temperature drops some 10 degrees and the humidity increases, which causes me to get a “Holland-feeling”. The next day it clears up and after Fred has done his work, we visit Combarro.
The port town has an ancient centre, that has been declared a protected town view. The fanciful streets descend to the shore and the houses are made of natural stone, which adds to the charm. Combarro is known for its fisherman’s houses with “horréos”, granaries built with granite, on a stone platform, very unusual! There are a lot of crucifixes and horréos along the shore, which is one of the most scenic ones in Galicia. But unfortunately very touristy! It swarms with souvenir shops with pushy personnel and the waiters of the many restaurants try to persuade you to come inside. We are not particularly into this, we can decide for ourselves where and what to eat. Finally, we find a restaurant with sea view ànd a view of the Pegasus in the far distance. Fred is not so fond of squid, really, so when we eat out I always choose one of the many varieties they have here in Spain. This time I had Chiperones, small fried ones, but I shouldn’t have….my stomach troubled me all night long. And this restaurant was, because of the tourist spot, one of the most expensive up till now! What a bummer! After this broken up night I still feel a bit wobbly and there is that thick mist again! Enough reasons to depart; we want the sun!

For those of you who ask themselves if we learn about what’s going on in the world….Of course!
We have the internet, read our e-mail and then watch the news. Maybe not every day, but regularly. And such news as the terrorist attack in Nice (France) really hits you; so many innocent wounded and dead. The more reason to enjoy every day!

Bewonderingswaardig al die verslagen. Hartstikke leuk en soms ook leerzaam voor ons in het thuisfront. Reuze bedankt
