 Channel Islands
This summer we have the intention to sail toe the Channel Islands.

12th May – 21st May 2012
We want to sail to the Islands in one fell swoop ; this implies that we would be underway for three successive days. Because there’s just the two of us, this means we have to take over  every 3 hours. Since we want to gain experiences in the years to come, this might be one of them.  But I’m not too experienced with night-sailing, the plan doesn’t really appeal to me. And thus we went looking for a couple of enthusiastic and like-minded sailors who would like to join us this year.
In 2011 we became members of the Union of Cruising Sailors. On a forum of this Union we placed an appeal for sailors to join us. Jaap and Jolanda reacted. We made an appointment to meet in the harbour where our boat lay.
During the ‘interview’, we found out that we had a lot of things in common. For example, their son regularly plays the Irish Pub in Enkhuizen, our favourite pub, which we try to visit at least once a year. Before we went off for a sailing-week, Jaap and Jolanda indicated that they would like to sail along with us for a few days, to get the ‘feel’ of the boat (and of us). We made plans to sail in the week of Ascension Day. We could combine the pleasant with the useful by cleaning up a bit and doing some chores. We made a date with Jaap and Jolanda to pick them up on Thursday in Lelystad, the Houtrib Harbour.
Saturday we did some shopping and took everything to the boat. Next morning we went  - on motor – to the Oog of Ketelmeer and dropped anchor there.  We put the dinghy to water and sailed around a bit, did some chores, to a break... etc.  Next day it turned out that we were really “crabbing” a bit, causing us to drift away from the side. Because the winds were rather strong, we decided to sail to the inside of het Oog and drop anchor there. Fred dropped the 2nd anchor with the dinghy. And then we discovered that the dinghy wasn’t as watertight as we thought. Another chore..*SIGH* ... Tuesday morning we sailed to Enkhuizen and found a nice spot in the Out Harbour. In a little shop we found the right parts for the repair of the wash basin in the guest cabin. SO we started the restoration and we stocked up food. In the evening relaxed and watched a movie ( we are fully equipped) . Wednesday we sailed back to Lelystad, where Jaap and Jolanda would arrive the next day. Because it was pretty cold, with a lot of wind and even rainy, We told them to bring warm clothing. And there they were, packed and ready on the pier.  And the weather......had turned! Hardly any wind and sunny. We left for Stavoren and tried out  the Jan Vane, our weather vane. After some adjustments he worked just fine. Another chore ticked off! It is really handy being on board with a few hands more.. More perception and consultation. Jolanda took care of the dinner: delicious pasta with smoked salmon cuts! The next day we sailed to Enkhuizen, where Jaap and Jolanda’s son would perform with his band, as a drummer. The Outer Harbour was pretty stacked, obviously everybody had the same idea during these few holidays and the lovely weather. Averagely, the boats lay in rows of 5 of 6. We could secure a place directly on shore. Next to us more and more boats were berthed. We went out for dinner to an Italian restaurant, where we enjoyed pizza, wine, beer and each other’s stories. Afterwards, with our bellies full, we headed for the Irish Pub “The Dubliner” and enjoyed until the wee small hours the drinks and the music.  I guess we were the last ‘sailors’  to get back to the boat.... Next morning we left, with very little wind, for Lelystad. The weather and the fact there were four of us, made it an excellent opportunity to try out the Gennaker. It  is about 110 m2 and has “Green Miles” written on it in big characters. The heritage of the previous owners, Florian and Arjen. What a sight! Such a gigantic sail! Pity there was actually too little wind to really try it out.  At the end of the day we arrived in Houtrib Harbour in Lelystad, where Jaap and Jolanda went home. We stayed for one more night in this harbour. In the evening Fred and I enjoyed a wonderful meal in the harbour restaurant, with view on our boat! Next day back to our home port, on motor. Both with a good sense about our week on the water! We enjoyed very much the days with Jaap and Jolanda. We get along very well and we ‘re on the same page. There is a lot to be learned from each other!
Jaap indicated that he wouldn’t mind helping along with the odd jobs to do before the summer holidays. We appreciate this geste very very much!

22th May – 28st June 2012
We are very busy in, on and around the boat. Jaap came on Saturday, as promised, to give us a hand. Together with Fred, he re-adjusted the second wind generator and connected it. Also, the automatic steering has been replaced. A bolt had to be lengthened and Jaap welded this at home. The automatic steering was completely new, still in the box, when we bought the boat from Florian an Arjen. Next weekend we could pick up the bolt at Jaap and Jolanda’s and finish the job. The motor in the toilet wasn’t working to well anymore. We tried to fix it, but it didn’t work, so we were forced to replace it. A whole new toilet-bowl including a motor was cheaper and easier that just replacing parts. I found a nicely priced offer on the internet, ordered it and it was placed. For the past weeks, Fred has kept himself very busy sorting out the electronics of the boat, adjusting and / or replacing them.  Metres and metres of unnecessary cables removed or replaced. We bought a new VHF, because the old one was not up to legal standards anymore. Previously, we replaced the old (saggy) floor of the “wet room” by new okumé floor parts. It looks super now. The plank next to the seats in the cabin has also been replaced. As told, we drilled holes in the planks under the bunk beds, for ventilation. We’re going to change that later on, but for now it suffices. I cleaned the space under the floor of our “wet room”. The new suction filter lies ready to be re-connected. Made tailored blackout curtains for the windows, with Velcro (to keep the inside dark and cool). Replaced pages, suspended a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket in the cook’s galley. We are still trying out for a new plank for the stairs, with a new doormat, a little table in the cockpit (is going to be replaced partly), a plank where you can secure 2 thermos, a shelf above the sink in the cook’s galley ( to place the trays for cutlery and such). The boat has an abundance of boxes where you can put away all and everything.  Slowly we get an overview of everything that is on board, what can be thrown away or be replaced. I cleaned out and set up all the boxes. We bought all sorts of plastic boxes to store as much together as we can. In short, a lot has been cleared out! We placed eyelets to fasten lifelines in the cockpit. In the cook’s galley we had some leakage. Removed the ceiling and replaced four screws in a block that ended up the cook’s galley. This was probably the cause. The Perspex plate in front of the window caused the most leakage. So we isolated it with putty. Everything is watertight now! Last weekend we put whole of the anchor chain (about 70 mtrs.) on the pier and painted it with red and white minium to indicate the metres. If the paint stays on, we have to wait and see, but it’s better than nothing. This week varnished the shelves twice and bought stackable supply tins ( internet)  for coffee, rice, pasta and such to stash away everything as economically as possible. The weekend to come we’re going back to the boat to enjoy the lovely weather and to go on with the chores. Jaap and Jolanda will join us there.
